Proximity and strong cultural and economic ties to the US helped to establish Jamaica as an ideal nearshore location in the early 1990s. Today, it is the most experienced BPO market in the Caribbean with a thriving call center industry. The Jamaican government is focused on driving growth in the BPO sector, through its Global Services Sector (GSS) project to upskill the BPO labor force. GSS skills development programs are preparing secondary school students to work in call centers by providing technical, language and communications skills training, customer service certification courses, and a career advancement program for customer service and data operations.
